Prosciutto vs. Mortadella

Variety is the name of the game when it comes to pizza! If you can name a type of meat, there’s a good chance that someone has tried to use it on a pizza recipe. When you look at our own menu, you’ll quickly realize that we are not an exception to the rule. Two meats that are prominent on our signature pizzas are prosciutto and mortadella. You may have heard of the former before, but did you know that it shares some common traits with the latter? We’ll tell you everything you need to know about prosciutto and mortadella below!

If you haven’t guessed the biggest similarity between the two yet, it might be exactly what you’re thinking; they both come from the same animal! Prosciutto and mortadella both come from pigs. The difference between them is what part of the pig they come from. Prosciutto is classified as ham, which comes from the meat of a pig’s hind legs. Mortadella, however, is classified as sausage, which is made of ground pork and pork fat. They may have a slightly similar taste, but they aren’t the same meat!

We can confirm that both of these meats have their uses on pizza, but what about other recipes? If you’ve heard of prosciutto before, you’ll know that it’s a common ingredient in Italian antipasto dishes. It’s also a staple of a majority of charcuterie boards, being the preferred meat of choice in those! Mortadella is a bit more varied in its uses. It goes great in cold sandwiches, as a ravioli stuffer, as an ingredient in Italian meatballs and it can even be used for pasta dishes like tortellini and manicotti.

Health Benefits

Despite coming from the same animal, prosciutto and mortadella have different health benefits. The main draw for prosciutto is its high protein content, which is essential for muscle growth and development. It has a good amount of vitamin B minerals as well, but not as high as the protein content! Mortadella differs from this by having a significantly higher vitamin B content. Mainly, it’s rich in vitamins B2 and B12, which are helpful for blood health and bone development.
